National Green
Building Standard

The National Green Building Standard (NGBS)
is the first and only residential and multi-family
green building rating system approved by the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
The NGBS provides practices for the design and construction of all types of green residential buildings, renovations, and land developments.

The green aspects of the NGBS include lot design, preparation and development; resource, energy and water efficiency; indoor environmental quality; and operation, maintenance and building owner education. Its platform also provides flexibility, allowing developers to make green choices based on climate and geography as well as style preferences and budget. Buildings are then verified through an expansive third-party rating system to achieve green certification under the National Green Building Certification Program. The NGBS can be used to rate single-family and multifamily homes, residential remodeling projects, and site-development projects, and still allow for the flexibility that is required for regionally appropriate best green practices. As with LEED, the NGBS incorporates a point-based system for achieving different levels of green-building certification.
